Winterizing Your Manufactured Home

Winterizing Your Manufactured Home
As the temperatures begin to drop outside, you know that winter is just around the corner. Now is a good time to start thinking about some things that need to be done so your manufactured home is ready for the colder months. Here are some tips so that you are ready if we have a harsh winter this year.

Inside Your Home

You want your home to be comfortable. This means keeping the cold air out during the winter. Check all doors and windows to make sure there are no drafts. You may to need to some weather stripping to your doors and windows. Or replace the weather stripping that has worn out. Thick curtains or drapes are another good way to keep cold air from invading your home through the windows.

Now is a good time to check your furnace. Make sure everything is working properly with your furnace now, because it would not be good if the heat stops working when it’s freezing outside. Also check your thermostat to make it is controlling your heating system properly. You may want to get a programmable thermostat, so your system doesn’t have to work as hard while you are away.

Winter is also a great time to replace the batteries in your smoke detector. Your smoke detector should be checked every month and the batteries replaced at least once a year.

Outside Your Home

The skirting of your manufactured home should be checked periodically throughout the year, but especially before winter arrives. As it gets colder outside, some animals may try to find warmth or shelter under your manufactured home. Start by inspecting under your house to make sure no pests are currently residing there. Then check for any damage or holes in your skirting and repair as needed.

Your roof is another area that needs to be checked several times a year. The fall can mean that leaves and debris have accumulated on your roof and need to be removed some your roof will not be damaged. It is a good time to check your roof for any holes and leaks. Winter can bring snow and also a lot of rain, so you do not want any leaks in your roof.

Exposed Pipes

The last place you have to check before winter sets in is your plumbing. You don’t want a pipe bursting due to the freezing weather. If you live in an area that regularly experiences a harsh winter, you may want to wrap any exposed water pipes to prevent freezing. Use a “pipe sleeve” or similar insulated material to keep your pipes protected. Newspaper can also provide some degree of insulation and protection for your exposed pipes.

Conclusion

The takeaway is to make your manufactured home is ready for winter and the freezing temperatures it can bring. It’s not hard to inspect your home to ensure your home is ready for what winter throws at you.
